Curtains: The Musical

Curtains: The Musical

Opening March 20 at the Azienda Theater, Chalmette, Louisiana

A hilarious murder-mystery musical is opening in St. Bernard Parish — and we couldn't be prouder to be part of it.

Curtains follows a theater company thrown into chaos when their leading lady suddenly dies on opening night. Everyone's a suspect. The detective is a theater buff. The show must go on — if anyone survives long enough to take a bow.

Book by Rupert Holmes. Music by John Kander. Lyrics by Fred Ebb. Original Book and Concept by Peter Stone. Additional Lyrics by John Kander and Rupert Holmes. This is the team that gave you Chicago and Cabaret — and Curtains is their love letter to the backstage musical, wrapped in a whodunit.

Community theater is where the American musical lives. Not on Broadway — Broadway is the showcase. Community theater is the heartbeat. It's where a kid walks into a rehearsal room for the first time and discovers that the stage is the only place in the world that makes complete sense. It's where a retired schoolteacher sings a Kander and Ebb number and remembers what it feels like to be heard. It's where the magic starts.

This company at the Azienda Theater is doing that work — keeping live theater alive in Chalmette, in St. Bernard Parish, in a community that knows something about resilience and about coming back stronger.

Go see this show. Support your local theater. The curtain goes up, the lights go down, and for two hours, a room full of strangers holds its breath together. That's the deal. That's always been the deal.
